The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) governing council is likely to back out the decision of not putting the six icons on auction after five franchisees, out of six, chased vigorously for Shakib Al Hasan. Only Comilla Victorians wanted Mashrafe Bin Mortaza as their icon while the other five franchisees requested the governing council to name Shakib as their icon, leaving them in a state of confusion. Shakib had played for Khulna Royal Bengals and Dhaka Gladiators in the first and second edition of BPL respectively.
In the wake of the situation, the governing council might put them on auction, set to be held on October 26, a source revealed. But the final decision will be taken by the BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon who returned home from ICC meeting in Dubai yesterday night. Sources said that Papon might clear the air regarding this today.
Shakib is the only Bangladeshi player who played in all domestic T20 tournament across the world including the high profile IPL tournament. He also has been the key player in IPL franchise- Kolkata Knight Riders. His experience and skill in this version was the key reason behind his high demand amongst the five franchisees—Dhaka, Chittagong, Barisal, Rangpur and Sylhet.
Earlier the BPL governing council secretary IH Mallick informed they would talk to the franchisees to know which players they want as the icon. It is learnt according to the earlier decision it was decided Shakib Al Hasan will be the icon of Dhaka Dynamites. Tamim Iqbal will belong to his home team Chittagong Vikings, Nasir Hossain will go to Rangpur Riders, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza in Comilla Victorians, Mahmudullah Riyad for Barisal Bulls and Mushfiqur Rahim in Sylhet Burners.
The third edition of the BPL, a domestic Twenty20 tournament will resume with six teams from November 20 after a gap of two years because of being hit hard by the
match-fixing and payment dispute issues in previous editions that prompted BPL governing council to come with the new system. Apart from six icons, the governing council has already released a list that included the names of the 116 local players who have been divided into four grades. Grade-A includes 16 players, Grade-B has 36 players, Grade-C has 43 and Grade-D has 21 players. The icons will represent for one of the franchises with the price tag of Tk 35 lakh, highest in the local players category.
196 foreign players have also been split, with players belonging to Grade-A costing the highest, USD 70,000. On the other hand, players belonging to grades B, C and D will earn USD 50,000, 40,000 and 30,000 respectively. The tournament will kick-off on November 20 with a grand opening ceremony. The opening match will begin two days after the opening ceremony. The matches will be held in two venues- Dhaka and Chittagong. Two games will be played everyday in the double-league system tournament. Four teams will be moved to the last four where IPL-like qualifier and eliminator system will be implemented this year. The final of the tournament will be held on December 15.
